Smoke coming from barbequed food is mouthwatering but the smoke from a cigarette is what your mouth despises the most even if you don’t agree with it. We all are very well aware of the injurious effects of smoking on our overall health because of the many smoke-related deaths each year but what we don’t realize is that smoking has negative effects on one’s oral health as well.
The affects are not limited to stained teeth or bad breath, it goes beyond that and gets much serious. The number of ways that smoking can affect one’s oral health is not a small list; it is rather a longer, dangerous one Some of the alarming effects of smoking are as follows:
- Bad breath
- Loss of smell and taste.
- Tooth Discoloration.
- Increase in plaque and tarter.
- Mouth sores and ulcer.
- Tooth decay and loss.
- Increased risk of Gum diseases.
- Increased risk of oral cancer.
It may be a disappointing
surprise but smoking and gum diseases
are parallel and go hand in hand. There is no doubt that a person is twice as likely to experience gum
disease if they smoke. The gums are affected by smoking because of the lack of
oxygen in the bloodstream, so the infected gums don't
heal. Smoking causes the smoker to have more dental plaque and causes gum
disease to get worse quicker than in non-smokers.
A lot of people know that smoking can cause lung and
throat cancer, but many people still are not aware that it is one of the main
causes of mouth cancer too. If you’re one of those people who smoke too much or
even once in a while, you need to stop and think what good is it doing to you?
On the other hand you know what damage it has done and what more damage it can
do.
